Speerstra Gallery Paris presents Mina Hamada "Home / 家"

12 October - 9 November 2024

For this new series of works, Mina draws deep inspiration from the intimate. Her work reflects her emotions. When she paints, she allows herself to be led by her sensations, which define the colors, shapes, composition and times of reflection. The combination of her soft, delicate colors is her signature.

The Speerstra Gallery Paris welcomes artist Mina Hamada for the second time. The artist has chosen to reveal and share a part of her intimate life. Usually confidential and reserved for the private sphere, the world of the home and the norms that govern this balance are at the heart of this new series of works, entitled "Home / 家" (which means home in English and translates into the kanji "家").

Mina Hamada's life is punctuated by many journeys. Departures, a source of adventure, excitement and sometimes the unknown, contrast with the return home, a moment when time regains its familiar dimension. This transition is precious and unique for everyone. These returns allow us to turn inward and integrate, with full awareness, the extraordinary moments we have experienced. This process of stepping back, often marked by strong feelings, intellectual richness and fulfillment, is optimized when it takes place in a comfortable environment conducive to reflection. The anchorage provided by the home environment allows us to take time for ourselves. The home provides a reassuring cocoon where our points of reference ensure our emotional and functional stability. For Mina Hamada, this parenthesis has become, more than ever, a return to our origins and the starting point for a new creative exploration.

Born in the United States, Mina grew up in Japan, where she studied design and illustration at the Sokei Academy of Fine Art & Design in Tokyo. In 2009, she moved to Barcelona to discover new cultures. Mina fell in love with Barcelona's contemporary urban art scene, particularly mural art. There she experimented with her own style and discovered new materials, but concentrated mainly on creating large-scale murals.

At the end of 2011, she met Zosen; the artist duo began collaborating on murals, installations and silkscreens, and have participated together in numerous festivals and exhibitions since 2012.

For this new series of works, Mina draws deep inspiration from the intimate. Her work reflects her emotions. When she paints, she allows herself to be led by her sensations, which define the colors, shapes, composition and times of reflection. The combination of her soft, delicate colors is her signature. With spontaneous gestures, she blends organic, nature-inspired forms with textures full of depth. Each of her works invites the imagination, stimulates the eye and brings a sense of serenity. Mina has settled into her new studio, where she is perfectly at ease and cherishes the moments when she lets herself dream and poetically escape. At the beginning of the three "Par la fenêtre" paintings, there was still no concept. It was as she continued to paint, improvising, that the feeling of a landscape stretching out and overflowing the canvas allowed her to imagine the window and the view outside. Using different types of medium to express a wide variety of nuances, Mina feels freer and bolder, also approaching the way murals are painted.

Through this exhibition "Home / 家", Mina presents the warmth of home, the joy of everyday life, ordinary happiness, a place of comfort, a place you want to return to. By creating these feelings in her canvases, there is the hope of recognising oneself in them. During the creative process, she was able to feel a sense of security and calm, and tells us: "I hope these paintings can invite people to come home, the home can be mine or yours, it can be everyone's home".
