He started out in the Paris suburbs in the late 80's and made his mark in the mid-90's with a style of graffiti he dubbed "ignorant style", inspired by his admiration for the discipline's New York pioneers. His aim was to free himself from the codes of the genre and of technique, to let the energy of the gesture and the purity of intention speak for themselves, following the example of art brut but remaining within the illegal framework of graffiti vandalism, developing his work mainly on the sides of trains and subways in Paris and Europe.
Born in 1975, Stanislas "FUZI" Baritaux is a multidisciplinary artist: painter, illustrator, photographer, tattoo artist, author, but above all a graffiti artist recognized by his peers.
He started out in the Paris suburbs in the late 80's and made his mark in the mid-90's with a style of graffiti he dubbed "ignorant style", inspired by his admiration for the discipline's New York pioneers. His aim is to free himself from the codes of the genre and of technique, to let the energy of the gesture and the purity of intention speak for themselves, following the example of art brut but remaining within the illegal framework of graffiti vandalism, developing his work mainly on the sides of trains and subways in Paris and Europe. In 2005, he explained his approach and ideology for the first time in a report alongside the artist JonOne, which was soon taken up worldwide and became a veritable movement in the graffiti community.
In 2007, he transposed his vision of art to the world of tattoos. His aim is to reinterpret classic symbols (the famous flash tattoos of sailors) by incorporating references to his lifestyle, freedom and the aesthetics of graffiti. He also sets himself apart by never tattooing in salons. He transforms each session into a genuine artistic performance, taking his clients to the city's most incongruous locations: subway tunnels, abandoned churches, rooftops, train depots and so on.
His approach, at first misunderstood by the tattoo world (as it had previously been by the graffiti world), was instead embraced by the underground. In just a few years, her "ignorant tattoos" toured the world, from New York to Sydney, via Taipei, Los Angeles and Berlin. The recognition given to his work led him to tattoo major figures in the art world such as DJ Diplo, Justice, Kavinsky, Os Gemeos, Steve Lacy and the actress Scarlett Johansson.
Always eager to discover new things, he continues his artistic explorations in a variety of mediums: canvases, sculptures, album covers, comic strips, cartoons, silkscreen prints and textile creations. A total self-taught artist, he constantly renews his style, while maintaining the authenticity and freedom he inherited from his graffiti practice.
In 2020, during the pandemic, he created the first French podcast dedicated to graffiti, "Le Podcast de Fuzi"; with over seventy episodes and a large community, it has become a reference today. In 2022, he presented his solo show "Defaced" at the Museum of Graffiti in Miami, the world's first institution dedicated to graffiti and graffiti culture. Today, he exhibits his work all over the world, collaborates with numerous brands (Adidas, Timberland, etc.) and his work is the subject of numerous publications.
In 2023, he published his first novel, "Les princes du dernier wagon", in which he tells his own story: from his first steps in graffiti as a teenager to its extreme practice, sketching a half-tone portrait of the mythical groups that have marked the history of French and European graffiti. Today, he divides his time between Paris, his hometown, and Los Angeles, his main place of residence.
